The Middle East is spiralling into even more of a crisis as Iraq falls into a pit of sectarianism and ruthless killings. Once a country with the best healthcare system, it is now one of the poorest in the Middle East with rates of cancer and infant mortality rocketing to dizzying heights! Meanwhile, sectarianism in Lebanon is brooding and Beirut (just two or three years ago seen as the jewel of the Middle East), is now rocked by terrorist actions on a virtual daily basis. Fighting is taking place by proxies with the flames of war being stoked up by various countries. This in turn may ignite a ruthless and bloody civil war, yet the army have bravely tried to hold this back. On the other hand problems continue in Palestine and Israel and the 'war on terror' continues unabated.
It is time to say that the people of the Middle East have a right to determine their own destinies. Theirs is the right to democratically determine who runs their administrations and that basic elements of infrastructure are in place for them to have basic and decent lives. To that end, there is no more room for killing within a sub-continent that is haunted by so many dead and with so little having been achieved, when the resources were there to make a difference. I hope that the people of Iraq have a future, that the people of Palestine have a just and supported nation whilst there is peace and security for both nations (Palestine and Israel) and that the people of Lebanon put aside their differences for the greater glory of a national unity government.
In the meantime, I will continue with the peace building, interfaith and conflict resolution work that I am undertaking within Israel and Palestine. If ever peace was needed - it is there!
