The UK Must Be at The Heart of Europe and the EU

August 24, 2007 1:05 AM

The EU and the UK! What is the Way Ahead?Successive UK administrations have never taken the opportunity to be key players at the helm of an ever increasing European Union. The Accession of the A8 countries has meant that the UK has lost a lot of regeneration funding and the 'wait and see' approach that the UK has taken on monetary union has long past. Monetary union and the 5 points that the previous Chancellor (now Prime Minister) talked about, were reached about 1 year ago.

The fear of being accused of 'giving too much power' to Europe and the other xenophobic chants bandied about in some press journals have meant that we have never made use of the opportunities available to us in Europe by being at the helm of developing and pushing for greater convergence. Also, over the last 2 years, there has been no drive by Labour administrations to sell the benefits of convergence and the benefits that we get by being part of the EU. This is essential if the public is to understand that the EU is not a threat and that the UK can and does benefit in so many ways from the legislation and practices that are proposed and implemented at this level.

Time to Come Together? It is time that the xenophobic cloud that blurs the vision of previous leaderships within the UK be lifted and the Prime Minister move us further towards the heart of the EU and to a position of strength; there are threats on the horizon within an association that has many more players within it and now is not the time to wobble. The only way is forward and that means selling the benefits of monetary union, EU legislation and our desire to be more closely associated with developing the future of the EU.
